Project Overview
This doctoral project sits at the intersection of computational biomechanics, in vivo kinematics, and data-driven neuromuscular modeling. The successful candidate will investigate subject-specific joint loading dynamics during high-impact functional tasks, utilizing state-of-the-art instrumented 3D gait laboratories, high-density surface EMG arrays, and high-performance simulation pipelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and calibrate subject-specific musculoskeletal models using OpenSim and custom Python/MATLAB algorithms.
- Collect, process, and analyze 3D optical motion capture data, ground reaction forces, and electromyography from clinical cohort trials.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary clinical teams across BAB-affiliated university hospitals in Belgium.
- Author high-impact peer-reviewed journal publications and present findings at national and international biomechanics congresses.
“Advancing the frontiers of human movement science through rigorous computational modeling, multidisciplinary clinical collaboration, and open biomechanics research.”
Candidate Profile & Qualifications
- Education: Master of Science (MSc) in Biomedical Engineering, Biomechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Movement Sciences, or a closely related quantitative field.
- Technical Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or C++, with prior experience in OpenSim, AnyBody, or FEBio being a strong asset.
- Communication: Outstanding written and spoken English communication skills; readiness to collaborate in a diverse, international research environment.
What We Offer
We provide a fully funded doctoral scholarship (standard Belgian university stipend) including full social security benefits, dedicated travel funding for international summer schools and conferences, and direct access to state-of-the-art experimental equipment across the BAB consortium.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit their application dossier including a detailed CV, motivation letter (max 2 pages), academic transcripts, and the contact details of two academic references. Inquiries and submissions can be forwarded directly via the BAB Job Portal.
